Upgrading the bomb Shelter in Lviv

Today, when an alarm goes off while YMCA Lviv are hosting activities for families and children, the staff and participants can reach a bomb-shelter in the basement of their current facilities.

When Russia launches an airstrike, the final area of impact of ballistic rockets is unpredictable. That is why, bomb shelters in Lviv, as well as other cities in the western part of the country, are absolutely necessary. The alarm often rings 3-5 times a day, resulting in the families and children that are participating in the activities having to hide in the bomb shelter for multiple hours.

Since this has become a fact of life in Ukraine, the current need YMCA Lviv has, is for the bomb shelter to be adjusted, so that activities can continue when taking shelter, creating at least a sense of comfort and safety for the children and their families, who are heavily affected, but trying to adjust to what’s going on around them.

That’s why one of our goals is to make the confines of the bomb shelters calming and friendly while families are taking shelter, eg. by painting the walls, and placing comforting items, to create a calming atmosphere.
